nitr0: "Super confident on Cobble"

We sat down with Nick "nitr0" Cannella to talk about Liquid upsetting Natus Vincere in the quarter-finals and the semi-finals ahead.

After grabbing second place in their group yesterday with a convincing win over MOUZ, Liquid were assigned to Natus Vincere for the quarter-finals.

Despite losing Train following a underwhelming Terrorist side, Spencer "Hiko" Martin and company took Nuke thanks to a seven-round offence and closed the series out with a dominating performance on Cobblestone.

nitr0 and the whole of Liquid have a lot of confidence with this lineup

In the following interview Nick "nitr0" Cannella talked about the entire quarter-final series and the potential fnatic match-up tomorrow, and gave us a different perspective on the Oleksandr "s1mple" Kostyliev subject.

In an interview that I did yesterday with Hiko, he said that you guys practised a lot against Na`Vi in the last couple of days at the bootcamp in Amsterdam, did that help you prepare and understand the match-up better?

Well, people say scrims don't matter, but obviously it gives you like a false confidence, but we were winning every scrim at the bootcamp against the top-tier teams and it really gave us confidence, we felt super good with this lineup. Playing Na`Vi a lot helps, you know their tendencies, they're obviously not going to scrim just to see what you do, they're trying to practise as well. So I would say yeah, we played them a lot and it really helped for the quarters.

The veto ended up on two maps you are very comfortable on and Nuke, I would assume Cobblestone was the best case scenario for the third map...

I would say yes, Cobble was the best third map we could've wished for. We're prepared for them on every single map, but obviously our most comfortable map is Cobblestone.

What was your thinking behind picking Nuke?

It comes back to scrims and practice, we beat them on every single Nuke, it wasn't even close, like 22-8, 21-9. We just had so much confidence on that map, we practised it a lot in the bootcamp and we just knew we could beat them on it.

Going into Train, you had this great CT side, first of all why do you think you were able to get up to 10 rounds and second of all, why did T side fall apart?

We've been working a lot on Train and especially on the CT side, because it's such a CT-sided map. And even towards the end of the bootcamp, we were focusing on our T side. Our CT side lacked towards the end, I think we were 5-0, but the rounds we won weren't convincing enough, so we got our money broke and they started doing fakes on us. We started over-rotating, they came back a little. T side, we just tried everything we had and it wasn't working. Our team environment was kinda bad because we were completely out of ideas. They were the better team on that map.

I imagine you were pretty confident with seven rounds as T on Nuke, firstly is Nuke really as CT-sided as people believe it to be, and were you comfortable with the Terrorist side?

I think Nuke is very, very CT-sided right now, especially since the teams don't really know what to do on T side. It's really hard to take upper, because there are so many angles where you can't see the CTs but they can see you. Our seven rounds on T side was like the best thing ever, honestly, the rounds that we won were close, very close, and we probably shouldn't have won a couple of them, and thank god we did. Seven rounds is really good and we were confident on our CT side.

Hiko had multiple great rounds, does he always do this well on the upper site with the auto-shotgun and overall?

Hiko was playing out of his mind on Nuke and Cobble, he was really good on Cobble. He won us a lot of rounds. He kinda coined the shotgun thing, but it's honestly really good, you get so much money from getting kills and they're mostly one-shots. As a dedicated upper person, you don't really rotate as much, you have vent rotators, outside rotators, so his job is take care of hut and squeaky, and the shotgun is perfect for that. He's so hard to kill.

Going into Cobblestone, you had a super good first side, what happened there?

We were just super confident on Cobble, we're really comfortable on that map. It just felt like everything was working, they couldn't find their groove. It felt like we were controlling the whole game throughout the whole map. GuardiaN couldn't find any opening picks like he usually does, it felt like every time he tried to change up his playstyle we were already ahead of him. For example on Cobble, I remember one of the rounds where we just flashed over to B and he got caught off-guard, one round he was caught off-guard in mid and got spammed through the wall. So he was probably frustrated and I think we played perfect CS on the first side.

Towards the end of the map Na`Vi got the forcebuy and a few rounds, did it ever cross your mind like "this is happening again"?

Obviously it's in the back of all of our heads, I'm not gonna lie, it is. But, I was way more confident that we would close it out, because Josh is a really good motivational speaker throughout hardships like that. He's also a super-solid player too, especially on the latter half. In the end we won a forcebuy in the last round, so...

I wanted to get a bit of a different perspective on s1mple, because I really only talked about this with Hiko, where he said that there was a lot of bad blood between him and peacemaker, how has overall been your experience with s1mple and how do you think you were able to overcome that and do well here?

In tournaments s1mple is a completely different player, he doesn't argue, he's a really good teammate at tournaments. He's just really difficult to deal with in practice, let's say peacemaker tries to change up a strat, and he's like "We didn't practise this, we shouldn't do this". And he comes up with all these arguments, and obviously they're both stubborn. In tournaments he's just a different player, he's just really good and doesn't argue, because he wants to win.

We have this last quarter-final coming up and it'll be between fnatic and Gambit, but the obvious storyline here is fnatic, in case that happens, how do you see your chances?

I'm gonna go back to scrims and results in scrims, we were destroying them in scrims, it doesn't really mean anything but like I said it's false confidence. So we're gonna be super confident, just like we were today against Na`Vi, just go in with a great mindset and use our raw skill and teamwork, and hopefully knock them out.

Do you think you're gonna have to be a little lucky with the random draw again?

I'd say no, their map pool is almost the same as ours, so I think it'll be fine.
